Vikings defeat Yeronga
Wynnum finished their preseason fixtures with a 1 point defeat of rivals Yeronga on Saturday. After 2 previous games against teams in different divisions provided 2 lopsided results; a 100 point win against a Toowomba side playing out of their depth, and a 100 point loss against a Wilston Grange side that were a class above, Wynnum enjoyed playing against a side in the same division as them, ultimately being able to pit themselves against a side they will come up against during the year.
With both sides wanting to keep their cards close to their chest, the first half was low scoring, with both teams happy to get the final kinks out of their games and try out new tactics. Wynnum was still missing numerous senior players; with new recruits Adam Lewis attending a wedding and Ash Rodrigues keeping his calf in cotton wool, as well as Jimmy Turner, who's wife is due to give birth in the next few days, key forward Andrew Mannison having a week off, hard nut Jason Harris and legend Robert Longlands getting match fitness in the reserves all to come back in the next few weeks.
With those players out, it allowed fringe players a chance to put their hand up for the season opener next week and try to cement themselves a spot in the team this year. Of those, Daniel Fitzpatrick and Darryl Piper continued to impress, and shows the incredible depth Wynnum have this year.
Willie Broome showed again that he is a class above everyone in the league with a typical game where no-one got near him. Luke Moriarty presented well at half forward and will be important this year. Matt France and Trent Farrow was rarely beaten by their men all day, and started attacks out of the backline with good ball movement with class.
This Saturday sees Round 1 of the State Association Div 1 for 2009, with Wynnum playing against Coorparoo Kings at Kianawah Rd, which will have the unfurling of the 2008 Premiership flag.
Reserves start at 12 midday, with the Seniors starting at 2pm.
